We believe that everyone — no matter who you are, where you come from, or what you've been through — deserves to know the independence and joy of literacy. Whether you want to improve your reading, writing, math, computer proficiency, English speaking, or life skills, we're here to help.
What We Do
Adult literacy tutoring in:
English as a Second Language
According to the U.S. Department of Education, 1 in 7 adults have low literacy skills — a staggering 32 million people across the country. In West Virginia, the illiteracy rate is estimated to be as high as 19 percent. Perhaps most alarming? These numbers have not seen any improvements in more than 10 years.
Adult literacy is tied to nearly every important social issue. Of the adults with the lowest literacy rates, 43 percent live in poverty. Low literacy rates are linked to more than $230 billion in healthcare costs and $225 billion in unemployment/workforce costs each year. (source: Proliteracy.org)
At Literacy Volunteers of Upshur County, we aim to change all of this. We offer free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults who want to improve their literacy and life skills. We're hoping to reduce the illiteracy rate in West Virginia — one student at a time.
Would you or someone you know benefit from free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring? Are you interested in getting involved as a tutor or auxiliary volunteer? Let's chat. Stop by our offices, send us a message, or give us a call. We'd love to meet you!
